What to ask a band or a DJ ↓What to ask a band or a DJ
What styles do you play at weddings?
Listen to live recordings and ask which styles are part of their usual set. If you have clear preferences, say so at the start and ask for specific examples. It tells you far more to hear what they actually play at weddings than to read the list of genres in the quote.
Do you play all evening, or work with a DJ as well?
The usual options are a band all evening, a DJ all evening, or a band for the first part and a DJ afterwards. If you choose the last one, ask who makes the handover, roughly what time, and whether they share the same sound system.
Do you handle the announcements during the evening?
At many weddings the band also makes the announcements for the couple’s entrance, the dance, the cake and the other moments. If you only have a DJ, ask whether they do this too or whether you need someone else. Say in advance which moments you want announced.
Can we send you the songs and the key moments in advance?
Say what you want to happen through the evening: the first dance, the songs you definitely want to hear and the moments you want kept. Saying what you do not want played matters just as much. Ask how they prefer to receive this and how far in advance.
What is included in the price?
Ask how many people come, how many hours are included, whether the sound system and the lighting are in the price, and what extra hours cost. If it is a band, ask how many members are on stage and whether the cost changes with the line-up.
Are travel and accommodation included?
If the wedding is in another city or runs until morning, ask whether travel and accommodation are included or added separately. Ask as well how many people come on their side, because the venue needs that number for the supplier meals.
