What to ask before the ceremony ↓What to ask before the ceremony
The civil ceremony
Where and when can we hold the civil ceremony?
Ask the town hall where you file the paperwork whether the date is free and whether the ceremony can take place somewhere other than the register office. If you want it at the restaurant or outdoors, get the approval confirmed before you book the venue.
What documents and conditions does it require?
Ask the town hall which documents are needed from both of you, what the deadlines are for filing the declaration and whether you need witnesses. The legal wait between filing the declaration and the civil ceremony is ten calendar days. Check every requirement before you fix the final date.
The religious ceremony
Which days can the religious ceremony be held on?
Ask the priest at the church you have chosen whether the date is free and whether a wedding can be held in that period at all. Fasting periods and certain feast days are taken out of the calendar for weddings, which rules out whole stretches of the year. Ask at the same time for the full list of documents and conditions, for you and for the godparents.
What has to be done beforehand?
Ask the priest which documents have to be presented before the service, when they are due, and whether there is a conversation or preparation beforehand. The religious ceremony follows the civil one: the priest asks for the civil marriage certificate and may not begin the service without it. Clarify who has to be present on the day.
The symbolic ceremony
What does the symbolic ceremony you offer include?
A symbolic ceremony does not replace the civil or religious one and carries no legal effect. Ask the celebrant how long it runs, which moments it can include, who can speak, and whether they write the text for you.
What sound equipment does it need?
Ask the celebrant whether they bring the microphone and the sound equipment or whether you have to provide them. For an outdoor ceremony, settle how the equipment is powered and what the plan is if it rains.
